Decorah Fish Hatchery – Iowa

Decorah Fish Hatchery
Decorah is a little out of the way town in northeastern Iowa.  It is home to Dunnings Spring, an ice cave, and the Decorah Fish Hatchery.  It had that small town big heart feel to it.  Not exactly along our path to our destination while getting there we were like why did we detour off the interstate.  Once there our perspective changed it is all about the journey not the end point.   Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. (a million imaginary points to name that movie)
Trout
Our girls have had fun at our last visit to a fish hatchery.  There is something about throwing in little flakes of food and watching fish go crazy about it.  Adults to kids seem to like it. At least in my family.  The Decorah Fish Hatchery is no one trick pony.  Besides finding the fish.  There is a nice picnic area with a spillway waterfall very scenic.  It is also home to a nesting pair of eagles.
Fish Pond
The Decorah Fish hatchery can be as long or as quick a visit as you want to make it.  Feeding the fish and taking a gander at Siewer’s Spring will not take very long.  But the Decorah Fish Hatchery could be a good starting point of the 11-mile Trout Run Trail that is good for walking, biking, and cross-country skiing.  The trail circles Decorah showcasing the best the town has to offer.
Sievers Springs Waterfall
We enjoyed our time in Decorah even though it was just a quick diversion on our road to Minneapolis.  One of those towns that would be nice to go back to when time is a little less pressing.  If and when retirement beckons and the open road of RVing comes calling.  I see a nice restful stay in Decorah in our distant future.
