The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park is a nice little oasis in Albuquerque New Mexico. It provides its visitors access to the Paseo del Bosque trail, a 16-mile bike trail that follows the Rio Grande. Besides its easy on and off access to the trail, the Rio Grande Nature Center is a good place to get in contact with Mother Nature.
We have been through Albuquerque a time or two and were looking for some new places to explore. Our three-year-old is a big fan of getting outdoors, so when we came across some information on the Rio Grande Nature Center we just had to check it out. The park was big enough to spend an hour or two, but not too big to leave our young ones exhausted and cranky. The perfect little getaway as we were waiting for the Balloon Fiesta to start up again.
One reason we like it was because it offered a different take on the usual arid environment that we saw throughout that part of New Mexico. The Rio Grande Nature Center was shady where the rest of ABQ was sunny. There was more water there than we had seen for miles.Though we have seen countless number of turtles swimming or ducks splashing before, this little diversion from the norm of the city made my daughter especially delighted.
The Rio Grande Nature Center has a few walking trails, bird blinds, a garden, and a pond or two. All of those things were fun to see and helped pass the time. The really impressive part of the place was their visitor center with its almost secret tunnel entrance and their large viewing area of the pond in the back. It is a nice little center that explains the flora and fauna of the area. The different habitat was a respite from the rest of the land and gave my young daughters something different to see. For those that have traveled with young kids, you know how important variation can play in keeping your sanity.
