Atlanta Cyclorama is a quick stop to a very unique attraction. The Atlanta Cyclorama is home to one of the world’s largest oil painting which spans over 350 feet long and over 40 feet high. Done it 1885-86 and put on display in 1893 the painting tells the battle of Atlanta in way that was the precursor to motion pictures. The painting was enhanced in 1936 when they turned it into a diorama. The “show” starts with a short introductory movie, followed by the cyclorama, and ends with a question and answer session with a tour guide.
Also on site is a small two story Civil War Museum with the usual artifacts you would expect in a Civil War museum weapons, uniforms, some personal items from the soldiers. There are some interactive exhibit areas that help explain the Civil War, but the most interesting thing in the museum area is an old 1800s steam locomotive. The history of train was interesting because it played a role in the “Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.”via
The Atlanta Cyclorama is located next to the Atlanta Zoo which made for great day out and about for us. We enjoyed our visit to the Atlanta Cyclorama for its uniqueness we had never seen anything like it before though we lucked out during our visit because our baby girl slept through the whole thing. If it would not have been her nap time we probably would not have been able to visit. There is no way our 1 year old girl could have made it through it.
As far as a history museum goes we enjoyed our visits to the Michael C. Carlos Museum or the Atlanta History Center more, but we were glad that got to see the Atlanta Cyclorama. If you are in the area of the Atlanta Zoo and have never seen it before then it was worth the stop though for us it is definitely in the category of one and done.
