Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is located just on the outskirts of the greater Atlanta metro area and is one of the few attractions in the area that is free. The Kennesaw Mountain national Battlefield Park is the site of a Civil War battle that took place from June 19th, 1864 to July 2nd 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign. The park is divided up into three main areas; Kolb’s farm, the visitor center area, and Cheatham Hill which was the main battlefield of the park. All three areas can be visited by car along its 18 miles of maintained trails that run through the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Since it is a free attraction it is a great place to get some exercise. On our particular visit we saw several hikers/runners make good use of the trails. Even if you are not the outdoorsy type make sure you take the time to at least drive/take the shuttle (weekends) or hike to the top of Kennesaw Mountain which overlooks Atlanta on a clear day.Inside the visitors center you can see an eighteen minute movie on the Atlanta Campaign and Battle of Kennesaw. There is also a well-stocked bookstore along with a nice museum filled with civil war artifacts that was expanded to twice its previous size in 2002. The exhibits are very well done and it is a great way to learn about the history of the site before you walk (or drive) along the trails. The displays are pleasing to the eye and you learn a lot without feeling overwhelmed.via
We have found that anytime we have visited an historic site the more we know going in or learn about at the visitor center the more enjoyable and memorable our trip is. If you are looking for an interesting and inexpensive thing to do in the Atlanta area look no further than Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.
