Great Zoo Exhibit: Northwest Passage

Bald Eagle Memphis ZooNorthwest Passage is one of the many great exhibits that can be found at the Memphis Zoo.  Northwest Passage, Teton Trek, China, and soon to open Zambezi Hippo Camp River provide the people of Memphis and those that travel there one heck of a zoo experience.  The Northwest Passage first opened in the spring of 2006 and is home to sea lions, polar bears, black bears, eagles, and ravens.Black BearsOver the last dozen years zoos have started to create total immersion exhibits and it has made for a much more entertaining and enjoyable visit.  Northwest Passage fits into that new zoo vision as it takes visitors through a recreated Pacific Northwest scene with painted walls, dugout canoe, and totem poles.  However, the real treat is the large enclosures for each of the animals.Northwest PassageDepending on how you enter the exhibit you will either come across the polar bear and sea lion area or if you enter it from the Teton Trek exhibit like I always do you will come across the bald eagles and crows.  The bald eagle exhibit is quite large and offers great views of the United States national bird.  The black bear area, while still impressive, is my least favorite part of the Northwest Passage due to two of the three viewing areas having bars that obstruct the views.  Saving the best for last is the sea lion and polar bear exhibits.  Both are quite large and provide both below water and above viewing of the large animals.Polar bear exhibitThe Northwest Passage is a fine exhibit, one I wish was in my hometown zoo.  As my wife and I have traveled throughout the United States visiting dozens of zoos along the way we have always been very impressed with the Memphis Zoo and can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.sea lion exhibitFor more information on the Memphis Zoo visit their website at http://www.memphiszoo.org/
