West Fork Oak Creek Trail: Where Fall Colors Pop

West Fork Oak Creek TrailMy wife and I were able to see a lot of wonderful things on our trip to Red Rock Country in Arizona, but by far the best part of it was a trip down West Fork Oak Creek Trail.  The trail is moderately difficult, it is 6 miles in length but the miles will go quickly because it is a relatively flat trail with just a few hundred feet of elevation gain over those 6 miles.  We ended up taking my parents and our one and half year old daughter, and everybody enjoyed the hike so this is definitely family friendly.Oak CreekThe trailhead is located just north of Sedona in Oak Creek Canyon on Highway 89A at the Call of the Canyon day use area which has a pay parking area with limited availability.  If you decide to take this wonderful hike we recommend that you go early in the morning to make sure you get a parking spot at this highly popular trail.  Also by going early you have a better chance of having less people on the trail unless you like walking with a crowd.West ForkThe West Fork Oak Creek Trail basically runs alongside Oak Creek and occasionally across it as you make your way down the trail.  The creek crossings are relatively easy, but proper hiking shoes that deal well in water would make for a more enjoyable hike.  A variety of tall trees surround the trail making this a fall foliage paradise with bright reds, yellows, and oranges making this a must do hike come autumn if you find yourself in the Sedona area.Fall ColorsWe thought the West Fork Oak Creek trail was one of the better ones that we have ever hiked and look forward to going back at a different time of the year to see the change in the surrounding scenery.  We heard that the spring and early summer are also equally beautiful with the full bloom of wildflowers that spring up alongside the trail.Oak Creek TrailThe trail is well marked for the first 3 miles and easy to follow and due to the high traffic rate it would really take something to get lost, but remember like all hiking opportunities take proper precautions and use common sense.  Always let somebody know where you are going or hike with a group and take more food and water than you think you will need.  If you are looking for a longer hike and have the hiking skill and knowledge to do it the trail does extend past the marked area.

West Fork Oak Creek Trail is an excellent trail for a day hike and if you are an avid hiker this needs to be on your bucket list if you have not done it.
