Great Zoo Exhibit: Oklahoma Trails

Mountain LionOklahoma Trails helps make a visit to the Oklahoma City Zoo worthwhile.  It opened in the spring of 2007 to great fanfare and along with their expanded Asian Elephant exhibit the Oklahoma City Zoo is turning into a zoo destination.  If they are able to complete the master plan over the next several years this zoo will become one of the better zoos in the south central part of the country.Entrance to Oklahoma TrailsRepresenting all 11 distinct “life zones” of the state of Oklahoma the Oklahoma Trails is like taking a trip across the state without ever leaving the zoo.  This exhibit packs a lot in 8 acres of space with 800 animals representing 100 different species and does a great job showcasing the diverse collection of animals that have called or do call Oklahoma home.Creatures of the NightWe really enjoyed our time at this exhibit, the space for each enclosure was a good size, the only two that seemed to be slightly on the small size were for the swift fox and bobcat.  Each exhibit offers open views of the animals with either glass or moated enclosures separating the animals from the people.  Another great aspect of the Oklahoma Trails exhibit is their effort to mirror Oklahoma’s natural environment from the flowers and trees found in the state to the 25-foot replica of Turner Falls.Oklahoma Trails Grizzly AreaSome of the highlights of the Oklahoma Trails exhibit are the two large bear enclosures which include 3 black bears and 2 grizzles, the large mountain lion exhibit, and the free-flight aviary with a variety of native birds found from around the state.  Other highlights of the Oklahoma Trails worth spending some time at are their nocturnal area, wolf enclosure, and the reptile, amphibian, and fish building.

On our visits to the Oklahoma City Zoo we usually visit the Oklahoma Trails twice and we look forward to seeing this zoo grow in the future.
