Desert View: A View to Remember

Colorado River Desert ViewNo trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon would be complete without taking in the spectacular sights from Desert View.  This particular overlook is one of my favorites of the South Rim because Desert View was my wife Karen and I’s first view of the park together.  It was a cold quick stop that early March day, but definitely a memorable one.  Desert View also provides something a lot of the overlooks do not and that is an unobstructed view of the Colorado River.

The watchtower sits at the end of Desert View and looks like it has naturally been there for centuries, but was only completed in 1932.  The tower rises up to 70 feet and allows visitors a different view of the canyon than you can get while walking around the rim.  There is also a gift shop on the ground floor of the tower where my wife and I continued our tradition of buying a Christmas ornament whenever we go on a “big” vacation.

Desert View, along with the rest of the Grand Canyon gets lots of visitors so if at all possible try to avoid the peak summer months and go early in the morning to avoid the worst of the crowds.  The Grand Canyon provides a once in a lifetime view just make sure you are able to share it with someone special, that is what truly makes the Grand Canyon grand.
