Photography Tip: Experiment

Running WaterIf you are like me when it comes to photography then there is a lot of experimentation that goes in to it.  I have come a long way over the last year and a half when I got my first DSLR camera.  At first there was a lot of using the auto controls and then about 6 months I made the big switch over to manual.  I still have to experiment as I go but not nearly as much as I used to.

For example, on our last vacation we went to lovely Sedona, Arizona. One of the main reasons I wanted to go there was to hike the West Fork Trail on Oak Creek.  I knew there would be a lot of photo opportunities from running water to the fall foliage.  Not being an expert but an aggressive amateur I knew there would be lots of opportunities to experiment and get a little bit better at my hobby.

It ended up being a great hike and there ended up being many opportunities to take pictures. It also gave me a chance to try to take a picture of flowing water that looks silky smooth.  I have always enjoyed pictures of running water and have always wanted to take one myself.  After a little experimenting I was able to come up with the above picture.

I have found that the best way to learn is just going out and doing it.  Just experiment and who knows, you might really end up liking the results.
