Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center: A Great Place to Start

Grand Tetons Visitors Centervia
One of the first places any national park visitor should go is the visitor center.  It is a great place for information and my wife and I have found that park rangers are a much better source on what to see or do in the park than any guide book.  Their information is always up-to-date especially on animal movements and they always seem to know of some places to get away from the crowds.  Karen and I have yet to come across a park ranger that has not been helpful.  Here is to hoping we never do.What a viewvia
If you are traveling through Grand Teton National Park a great place to stop to get a feel for the park is the new Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center.  The center is located across from the park headquarters in Moose, Wyoming 12 miles north of Jackson.  The Craig Thomas Discovery Center just opened in 2007 and everything inside still looks brand new.  It is a 22,000 square-foot facility with state-of-the-art natural history exhibits, an introductory video of the park, and a relief map that lists out of the best areas of the park.

The Craig Thomas Discovery Center is also well designed both inside and out.  The inside has a log cabin feel to it with wooden beams running through the 21 million dollar building.  It also makes great use of its scenic location with 30 foot glass walls that show off the Tetons brilliantly.InsideNext to the Craig Thomas Discovery Center is a short trail to Murie Ranch which was owned by two brothers Olaus and Adolph Murie who were well known natural scientist for their work in creating the 1964 Wilderness Act as well as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It is a short walk to their ranch which was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2006.  The Craig Thomas Discovery Center along with the short hike to Murie Ranch is a good introduction to the park so if you can spare an hour or so to get good information about the park then we highly recommend you stop by.Muire ranchTo read all of our reviews of things to see or do in Grand Teton National Park click here
