Top 10 Things to see and do in the Red Rock Country of Arizona

Red Rock Country of Arizona is home ot some of the most scenic areas in the Southwest.  There are lots of outdoor attractions and adventures to be had there.  With all the trails and scenic attractions it was tough to come up with a top 10 list for region.  Like all top 10 lists they are subject to personal bias so I hope you enjoy ours and it gives you some ideas for some of things you can do when visiting the Red Rock Country of Arizona.  So without further ado here is the official Plainadventure’s list of the top 10 things to see or do in the Red Rock Country of Arizona.

10. Montezuma Castle National Monument

Montezuma Castle is a Pre-Columbian structure that dates all the way back to the 1100’s.  Though named after the Aztec emperor Montezuma this ruins near Camp Verde Arizona have nothing to do with him or the Aztecs.  A 1/3 mile trail will take you past the five story cliff dwelling, unfortunately the actual ruins are off limits to preserve the sight.  For more information on the Montezuma Castle National Monument go to their website at http://www.nps.gov/moca/index.htm

9. Devil’s Bridge Trail

8. Slide Rock State Park

Slide Rock State Park is home to a natural water slide that is extremely popular during the hot summer months.  Besides the unique slide the park also has three short hiking trails to choose from.  For more information on Slide Rock State Park visit their website at http://azstateparks.com/Parks/SLRO/index.html

7. Visit an Animal Park

White TigerDepending on what type of animals you want to see you have two great places in Red Rock Country to have an animal encounter.  Bearizona is home to animals from North America and provides wonderful natural environment for its animals.  Out of Africa gives visitors a chance to visit Africa without leaving Arizona. 6. Oak Creek Canyon

Oak Creek Canyon is a beautiful 16 mile river gorge filled with hiking trails, waterfalls, and streams.  Oak Creek Canyon is located within Coconino National Forest which you can learn about by checking out their website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/coconino/

5. Bell Rock

Bell Rock is a scenic rock formation just north of the Village of Oak Creek.  A short easy trail will get you to the base of the formation and the chance to see other landmarks along the way.  It is a popular destination especially for those with non-traditional viewpoints finding the rock to hold some mythical powers.

4. West Fork of Oak Creek Trail

3. Red Rock Scenic Byway

Red Rock Scenic Byway is only 7.5 miles long but it is one of the most scenic roads in all of the southwest.  It winds through Sedona’s Red Rock Country which is often called a museum without walls.  It takes about twenty minutes to drive but you should allow several hours to see all the activities along the byway. 2. Red Rock State Park

Red Rock State Park is a scenic state park which features a red sandstone canyon just outside the city of Sedona.  Its main purpose is to preserve the riparian habitat along Oak Creek but it also provides some excellent hiking opportunities as well as a visitor center complete with movie theater and interpretive exhibits and it serves as an educational facility.  For more information on Red Rock State Park visit http://azstateparks.com/Parks/RERO/

1. Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is one of the most photographed sights in Arizona.  Located in the Coconino National Forest the summit elevation is 4,921 feet.  The trail up is a very popular, short but steep ascent and is truly one of the highlights of a visit to the Sedona area.
