Monday Musing: Fantasy Football oh How I Loathe You

Every fall I have this great debate on whether or not to play fantasy football and every year after having that debate I end up playing.  Now for those that do not spend their Sundays pouring over the latest yards, receptions, and touchdowns just enjoy the games every weekend and do not get sucked in to the world of fantasy football, like most addictions it has ended up being a love hate relationship.  Oh how I hate to play but each year I keep going back.

I really thought that this year was going to be the one.  I told myself that this year I was going to have the will power to say no and be able to enjoy a fall sitting on my couch in peace and not constantly checking the scores, seeing who just got injured, or how many points I am up or down.  Part of that is my competitive spirit and hating to lose.  My wife once found a sign for me that said, “if you’re not prepared to lose every friend you have over a board game, you’re not playing hard enough”  she said it was just in jest but the way she pointed it out to me makes me think otherwise.  So this was the year I was going to stop and just when I thought I was out they pull me back in.  The fantasy articles started popping up, friends started talking, and the competitive juices started flowing so here we go again.

Just one season I would like to just root for my team without having to worry about my opponents players.  All right my team just scored oh wait who scored that touchdown… whose fantasy team is he on… oh its ok I am not playing him this week… are thoughts that end up running through my head every Sunday.  How sweet it would be to not have to worry about those things and just end up cheering for my favorite team on a nice fall Sunday afternoon. But alas it is not meant to be and I have signed up for two leagues this season.  At least I am getting my addiction under control and it is not as bad as it was in 2008 when I was in 5 different leagues.

So here’s to a new fantasy football season when those that dreamed of finding glory on an actual playing field now end up trying to live those dreams on a computer screen.  Good luck to all those fantasy gurus out there may your teams score many points each week unless your players are different than mine, then I hope it is an epic failure for you.
