Great Zoo Exhibit: The Lied Jungle

The Lied Jungle Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

GibbonThe Lied Jungle is one of the largest immersive rain forest zoo exhibits in the world at 1.5 acres of space complete with a 50-foot waterfall I would say this is as close as a person can get to a rainforest without actually going to one.  Karen and I love to go to immersive exhibits because it really brings out the emotion, the sensory stimulation, and fantasy of traveling to the far reaches of the planet.  The Lied Jungle which is on our top 10 zoo exhibits in the United States helps set the Henry Doorly Zoo apart from other zoos.Scarlet MacawThis exhibit was built in 1992 at a then cost of $15 million dollars it allows visitors to experience a rainforest not only from the canopy but also along a dirt trail along the Jungle floor.  Since its inception the Lied Jungle has won numerous awards including best zoo exhibit in 1994 and top eight US engineering accomplishments in 1992. The exhibit itself is around eight stories high and has 123,000 feet of floor space for its three themed areas as well as educational rooms, and display management areas.  Needless to say it is a very large exhibit and it needs to be to house the ninety animal species that can be found here.Under the waterfallIt does not take long to really appreciate the Lied Jungle especially when compared to more traditional exhibits where there are bars and glass separating the animals from the visitors.  The Lied Jungle is about as barrier free as one can get while keeping both the animals and people safe.  Of course there are some aquarium like tanks to house various animals, but there is something special about having gibbons swinging in branches to your right, and macaws to your left, and pygmy hippos below you.Pygmy HippopotamusKaren and I found it very interesting to see the different plant species found in the rainforests of Asia, Africa, and South America.  They also had several unique animals like the ebony langurs and Malayan tapirs.  There is just so much to see here that we recommend at least half an hour in just this one exhibit or do what we did and visit the Lied Jungle when you first arrive and then swing through again on your way out.Checking each other outThe Lied Jungle is just one part that makes the Henry Doorly Zoo a special place to visit which is why this zoo ranks so high on our top 10 list of the best zoos in America.  If you find yourself in the Omaha area make sure you stop by the Henry Doorly Zoo it is well worth the visit.
