Great Zoo Exhibit: Penguin and Puffin Coast

Penguin and Puffin Coast St. Louis Zoo IMG_8365One of the first quality zoos that I had ever visited when I was a child was the St. Louis Zoo and it just keeps getting better every time I visit.  I remember the first time that I saw the Penguin and Puffin Coast exhibit at the Saint Louis Zoo and I recall thinking why in the world don’t more zoos have exhibits like this.  I had never had the feeling of animals being so close and all around me before that it has stuck with me since that first visit to the Penguin and Puffin Coast.IMG_8357The Penguin and Puffin Coast displays a variety of penguins from around the world as well as different types of puffins.  The exhibit starts out with group of Humboldt penguins that originate from the coasts of Peru and Chile that live in enclosed areas outside the main exhibit.  Once inside the doors you will feel the refrigerated air that keeps the rest of the penguins and puffins comfortable year round.  There will be King, Gentoo, and Rockhopper penguins on both sides of you as the Penguin and Puffin Coast was the first walkthrough penguin exhibit in America.IMG_8378Once you turn the corner you will enter their puffin area and these guys are just as cute as their penguin counterparts.  The Saint Louis Zoo has two types of puffins the Horned and Tufted puffin as well as the King Elder which is a type of Arctic duck.IMG_8371The Penguin and Puffin Coast is a really well put together exhibit that lets you get as close without touching as you can get.   Though the Penguin and Puffin Coast is becoming a little dated it is still a very fine exhibit that has paved the way for other penguin enclosures that have come on a line in the last couple years as well as the future.  If you have never been to the Saint Louis Zoo Karen and I highly recommend going in fact it is on our list of the top ten zoos in the United States we think so highly of it.IMG_8362to see other zoo exhibits like the Penguin and Puffin Coast click here
