What Makes Our Marriage Work: play to each other’s strengths

What Makes Our Marriage Work: Play to Each Other’s Strengths

I think one of the most amazing things about being married is having a partner in every aspect of your life.  It is especially wonderful when they happen to complement you really well.

Over the past (nearly) five years that Kenny and I have been married we have gotten to experience a lot of things together.  We’ve been snorkeling in Hawaii and the Caribbean, we’ve climbed Angels Landing while clinging to chains on the side of a cliff, we have taken road trips all across the United States, we have remodeled our house and even survived the great adventure of pregnancy and child birth.  All along the way we have had opportunities to work together.  Over time we have been able to get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.  In the beginning it was harder because we were just getting to know each other, but now we can easily fall into our strong roles.  I can only imagine in about twenty more years how easy it will be to get things done.

One example I can think of is while we are on the road with baby M.  Kenny has always been the driver and I am the navigator on our road trips.  This has worked out great until we had a little tyke in tow who isn’t too fond of her car seat.  It would really cause me a lot of stress and anxiety to try to keep her entertained and happy while Kenny was driving so he bravely stepped up to the plate and road in the back seat with our sweet baby.  He is so amazing with her!  He can keep her happy and entertained for hours on end, he can ‘read’ all her signals and knows when she is getting hungry or sleepy and he just soothes her right off into dreamland.  I don’t know how he does it, but he is a pro.  And I have really gotten to enjoy the little break to just focus on the road and drive.

It isn’t the way things were in the beginning, but we have each taken on the role that we are best at and it works great for our family.  So, it has really been helpful for us to discover our strengths and use them to our advantage.
