Dallas Museum of Art: Big Art in the Big City

Ancient MaskThe Dallas Museum of Art is a world class art museum located in the Arts District in downtown Dallas.  It is one of the biggest art museums in Texas with a gathering of more than 22,000 works of art from around the world.  Their massive collection includes works from the third millennium BC to modern times that would make any art enthusiasts heart skip a beat.Ancient WorksFrom its humble beginnings in the Dallas Public Library, the Dallas Museum of Art has sure grown up in the 100 plus years since they first showcased pieces of art.  The collection now includes works from every major continent along with an extensive collection of contemporary art and decorative and design art.   Being a history teacher I am naturally drawn to pieces from the ancient world, and once again the Dallas Art Museum did not disappoint, having many pieces covering the major eras of ancient Mediterranean history to lots of pieces from pre-contact America.SE Asia ArtOne of things that we found that sets this art museum apart from others that we have visited was their interactive area called C3 which stands for Center for Creative Connections.  This exhibit of the Dallas Museum of Art is there to allow visitors to engage their creative side by inviting people to look, touch, listen, read, make, and talk about art.  Karen and I have found that our typical visit consists of a lot of looking at one piece then moving on to the next.  So for us it was nice to go to an art museum that offers a lot more engagement for its visitors.  I am sure we would have gotten more out of the experience if our daughter M (7 months old when we visited) was old enough to make use of the interactive area.George Washingto SculptureMy wife Karen took several different art classes during her formal education so she always gets a little bit more excited than I do about seeing work from famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock.  I try to find the deeper meaning in the work, but usually just end up liking what is the easiest on the eyes.  I guess you could say I am an art Neanderthal, but I am trying to learn.Arts of AsiaOverall, I thought the Dallas Museum of Art was well put together with a large varied collection of art.  There is definitely enough there to keep one busy for hours on end, and the best part is that it is absolutely free to see the general exhibits.  The only downside is that since it is downtown parking is limited unless you pay to park in their underground parking garage.  Besides the works on the wall the building itself and sculpture garden on the grounds are showpieces all to themselves.
