Sunday Scripture: Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting  Father, Prince of Peace.

This week we couldn’t help but focus on a Christmas verse for our Sunday Scripture, the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of our savior.  This verse always brings to mind the songs of Handel’s Messiah.  I played the violin all throughout school and playing The Messiah was always a Christmas highlight for me.

Christmas time can easily become such a hurried, stressful time.  It is important to slow down and find some time to reflect on the true meaning.  This year having a sweet little baby of our very own it makes the story of Mary and Jesus take on a whole new meaning.  Thinking about how young Mary was, and that she was ‘great with child’ and riding on the back of a donkey for a long journey to Bethlehem.  I can only imagine how uncomfortable she must have been.  Then they arrived at their destination only to find out that there were no rooms at the inn.  She had to face the scary venture of childbirth in a manger!

This week we will try to meditate on Isaiah 9:6 and remember that day so long ago when our savior, Mighty God, the Prince of Peace was born.
