Martin Park Nature Center- A natural gem in Oklahoma City

The Creek Runs Through It Martin Park Nature Center is a wonderful place to enjoy a bit of nature while not having to leave the Oklahoma City area.  It is fun and one of the best parts is that it is free.  The park does a great job creating a place to learn about the nature that can be found in Oklahoma.  Not knowing much about the park other then the fact that it is free Karen and I stopped by one weekend morning and were presently surprised at what we found.

The park consists of three trails that add up to around a 3.5 mile hike that is clearly marked and well maintained.  There are several bird observation blinds as well as a watch tower for visitors to use to see the variety of birds that live in the park or migrate through.  Martin Park Nature Center also has a very nice playground for the kiddos where the main apparatus is an artificial tree that children can go through or slide and swing from.  One of the park highlights is a nature museum complete with aquariums of living specimens that can be found in the park as well as animal bones and fossils.

Martin Park Nature Center also puts on several different education programs from full moon hikes to learning how to identify Oklahoma’s venomous snakes.  Karen and I did not get to spend as much time as we would like the day that we went, but we did come across several workers/volunteers and they seemed to really care about the area which was nice to see.

Karen and I will most definitely go back to the Martin Park Nature Center when we are in the area.  Hopefully, next time we go it will be on a much cooler day that way there is a better chance to see some of the wildlife that calls that area home.  Though we did not get to see many animals other than a toad and a squirrel and both of us were pretty sweaty by the end of the hike we had a good time.  Even M seemed to enjoy herself there until it was time to nurse and change her diaper which at that point we figured it was time to leave.  If you live in the Oklahoma City area or are ever traveling there Karen and I highly recommend stopping by the Martin Park Nature Center for a nice hike through nature.
