Happy Independence Day

American Independence DayToday is the day that we celebrate 56 brave men who took a bold leap and placed their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor on the line to separate from Britain.  They declared to the world that freedom from a tyrannical king was going to be their choice and in so doing changed the world forever.  While these men are far from perfect they are perfect examples of what it takes to make the ultimate sacrifice for love of country instead of love of self.  While there are a lot of misconceptions about these signers of the Declaration of Independence and what these men went through during the war, for example the myth that around 20% of them died from wounds and hardships of the Revolutionary War.  What we do know is that five of them were captured by the British; a number of them had their homes ransacked and burned, Abraham Clark saw two sons captured by the British and incarcerated on a prison ship, and John Witherspoon lost a son at the Battle of Germantown.

So, does the myth of what they went through live up to the legend, but that is not the important thing, the important thing is that they were willing to do it when they signed the Declaration of Independence.  How many in congress today do you think would be willing to put their lives, fortunes, and their sacred honor on the line for something they strongly believed in.

Celebrate today in whatever way that you do, but never forget that it has taken sacrifice to make this country great.  Not only by the 56 brave men that signed the Declaration of Independence but the sacrifice of many great people from many generations.  Without their willingness to do what it takes we would not be celebrating this great holiday today.  John F. Kennedy got it right when he said, “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country.”  That sort of thinking is how our country got started and it is that sort of thinking that will keep us going.
