I would say that 99% of the people that own a camera do not have the time or the money to make sure everything is just right before they take the picture.  Yeah, it would be great to be a professional photographer and have time to scout locations, wait for better lighting, and have all the right equipment to get great shots.  However, even they have to be quick on the draw and make their moments count because you never know when all the elements will wind up together again to get that shot your after.

Karen and I are learning about this tip when photographing our baby girl.  Just being a few weeks old now and growing so fast we have to use the openings we get to get the pictures we want.  Unfortunately for us, we have missed a few times when M was content and can get good pictures of her.  Then sometimes we start our “photo shoot” then she will get fussy and our window closes for the time being.

Making each moment count comes in handy for me when I am taking pictures of M but it works for 99% of the time that I have my camera with me.  My windows of taking pictures is so small since I do not have unlimited time or resources so I have to make it count.  The quicker I am at getting the shot I want the better it usually turns out.  The reason for this is because the subject may move, get tired of posing, fly away, clouds may cover the sun, and my batteries might die.

Some Simple Photography Tips to Making Each Moment Count

  1. Know what each button on your camera does.  I just upgraded to a DSLR camera and I am still learning how to use it and I have already missed some shots because I was busy messing with the buttons.
  2. Make sure you have space on your memory card and the batteries are charged.
  3. Do not worry about taking too many pictures.  The more that you take the better chance you have a getting a shot you like.
  4. Be ready to shoot.
  5. Practice!!! The more you practice the faster you will be at getting the shots that you want.
