Flora Photography Number 18 – Sempervivum Tectorum

Sempervivum Tectorum This picture is one of many succulents or cacti that I took while traveling through the southwest.  At first I was not all that keen on taking a picture of a cactus, but after while they kind of grew on me.  Something that can survive and thrive in a harsh environment has to be given some respect and after a while I started to appreciate its own style of beauty.

While this is not the best picture of a cactus that I have ever taken, what makes it stand out to me is the amount of water droplets that are bubbled up on the plants surface.  When I saw those bubbles laying on this cactus I tried to capture it the best I could without losing what I was taking the picture of.  Photos like the one above really make me second guess not springing for a DSLR camera with a macro lens.  I believe that I could get some really interesting shots with a tripod, good lighting, and water droplets.  Then again a nice point and shoot, a computer, and our website is enough to make a memory last.
