Wildlife Photography Number 2 – Banded Orange Butterfly

2 Butterfly 2 St. Louis Watermark One of my favorite things to photograph is the butterfly not because I am a particular fan of butterflies, I mean in the world of insects the butterfly is probably my favorite and that is only because most other bugs give me the creeps.  The reason that I like photographing butterflies is the fact that it makes me work on the skills of photography.  The unpredictable nature of the butterfly tries my patience because just when I think I am going to get a good shot their wings fold up or it will take off. Any time that I can go to a butterfly house like the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, Colorado I get a chance to work on being patient when I am out taking pictures.  For somebody, that always wants to be on the move being patient is something that I really have to work on.

The stand out feature for me in this picture is the contrasting colors between of the butterfly and the plant that it is on.  The orange of the banded orange butterfly starts to pop especially as the background fades to black.  While I really enjoy the camera that I have, a Canon Powershot SX30IS, the manual focus is just a little lacking and getting  a truly sharp picture seems to elude me.  However, I cannot justify the price point of a quality DSLR so I will continue to nitpick and complain whenever I am out trying to focus in on a relatively small area like a butterfly, and someday I will finally master my camera and my nitpicking will become considerably less.

That is beautiful. I would have to say the butterfly is my favorite insect also. My least favorite (at least around this part of the country) would be the mosquito.

I agree with you on the mosquito. I might not like them but they sure seem to like me.
