Wildlife Photography Number 4 – Peacock Trying to Attract a Mate

Peacock Karen and I were visiting the Henry Doorly Zoo during the springtime when we came across a peacock trying to do all it could to attract a mate.  We first saw it sitting on the fence behind looking out over a field, but when a peahen sauntered over to his area he swooped down and raised his tail feathers.  When it looked like she wanted nothing to do with him, the peacock did not hold anything back.  It started strutting towards her shaking his tail feathers at her.  I had seen peacocks many times before, but I had never seen one in full dance mode.  I had no idea that a peacock would rattle it feathers together to try to attract a mate, it sounds a little bit like a rattlesnake shaking its tail.  It was a very interesting sight.  After watching the display for a while Karen and I wished to leave the two love birds alone and went on to the next exhibit.

This is number 4 of my top 25 wildlife pictures because it was definitely a unique experience for both Karen and me.  We both feel that the whole point of taking pictures is to capture those unique moments that makes up life.  I like the fact that we were in the right place at the right time to capture this peacock trying to attract his mate.  We would like to think that in the end he was able to get his mate, however later that night when I tried to recreate the peacock dance towards Karen she just laughed at me and turned off the lights and went to sleep.
