Wildlife Photography Number 18 – Coyote Sneaking by Elk

Coyote Sneaking By ElkKaren and I like to visit the wild places that are left.  One of our favorite wildlife refuges that we have ever been to is in Oklahoma at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.  The reason that we like it so much is the chance to see some of the bigger mammals that can be found in the United States.  The Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge is home to a large herd of bison, elk, and long-horn cattle.  When we go to this refuge we try to go in the fall because the elk start to bugle and it is pretty neat to be out on a hike and hear the bull elk trying to attract and gather a harem.

This photograph was taken just down the dirt road from a prairie dog town in the refuge.  Karen and I were standing by a fence watching those little prairie dogs scurry from one hole to the next when she happened to notice some elk move out of the woods about 500 yards away.  We got in our vehicle and drove over to them.  As we approached they just looked up at us once and kept on grazing.  The next thing we saw was a few coyotes start to come out of the woods and make their way through the elk.  It is just amazing to see the size difference between the two animals.

I like this photograph because having the coyote running through the picture gives the photograph a sense of size.  Just seeing a picture of an elk it is hard to realize just how big those creatures are, but with the coyote in the shot it looks like that bull elk could just squash that coyote with one hoof.
