Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge – Maui

Kealia Coastal BoardwalkKealia Pond was set up as a wildlife refuge in 1992 to help preserve one of the last natural wetlands in the Hawaiian Islands.  The wildlife refuge contains roughly 700 acres of prime coastal salt marsh habitat.  The refuge is home to 30 species of birds including waterfowl, shorebirds, and migratory ducks.  The condition of Kealia Pond changes with the season and is a good place to see Hawaii’s endangered wetland birds as well as some migratory birds that come from North America and as far away as Asia.
BoardwalkKaren and I visited the park just before the rainy season so the pond had already shrunken significantly.  Late fall and early winter would be the best time to visit Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge because you could take full advantage of seeing the diversity of the migratory birds.
Tropical BirdKaren and I took the boardwalk hike and then crossed over to Sugar Beach.  The boardwalk was a nice walk through the marsh that was mostly dry.  It was fun spotting some of the birds that were there.  It was nice to get to walk out in the sunshine and hear the waves crashing upon the shore.  Karen and I went in the afternoon and there was only one other car in the parking lot so we basically had the whole place to ourselves.
Sugar BeachIt was a wonderful walk.  Karen and I just took our time and really enjoyed just walking hand-in-hand together.  Since we are always on the go on our vacations trying to soak in as much as we can in the short time that we have in one place, it was a great change of pace just going out for a leisurely walk.  It was nice for Karen and I to stop and take the time to “smell the roses.”
