Oklahoma City Zoo

Baby ChimpanzeeThe Oklahoma City Zoo is often ranked as one of the top 10 zoos in the United States, and after visiting we can see why.  The zoo covers 110 acres and is home to more than 1,700 animals.  While it is the oldest zoo in the southwest region, originally opening its doors in 1902 and has been in its current location since 1920 the zoo looks brand new.  The reason it has held up so well is that since the mid 90’s the zoo has been getting an overhaul which they will continue until 2019.  When it is all said and done should be able to continue as one of the best zoos in the United States.
Karen with GooseThe newest attraction at the Oklahoma City Zoo is the first part of their Expedition Asia.  The first part is a fabulous Asian Elephant exhibit that is over 9 acres.  The zoo will be able to house up to 2 bulls 4 cows and their offspring.  Right now the zoo has 2 cows and a baby elephant which is just one of the cutest things in the animal kingdom.  This exhibit is world class and something pictures cannot do justice.  The second half of the Expedition Asia exhibit is scheduled to come online sometime in 2013.

Baby ElephantExpedition Asia is not the only new thing at this zoo they opened Oklahoma Trails in 2007 which is home to black and grizzly bears, alligators, bison, creatures of the night exhibit, and an open area with native birds among other things.  It is a wonderful exhibit that gives lots of room to all of its inhabitants.

Creatures of the NightIn 2010 the zoo opened up a new Children’s Zoo which has a touch yard with several barnyard animals.  The Children’s Zoo also has a waterway that leads to flamingos and a koi pond and play also there is a play area that has soft padding for those rambunctious children.  Spider and squirrel monkeys also make their home in this area.  The Children’s Zoo is not the only thing for children to do here, there is also a whole separate playground area near the member’s entrance, a safari tram, a carousel, paddleboats, climbing wall, and a sea lion show.

Children's Zoo EntranceIf you come during the summertime you might want to stop by the butterfly garden which has several different species of native wild flowers, which bring a full range of butterflies and other flying insects.  This exhibit is outdoors and does not mean you will see tons of butterflies but it is a beautiful walk through wild flowers.
Monarch ButterflyAnother exhibit worth seeing is the Cat Forest which has nine species of wild cats including snow leopards and tigers.  There is also the Great EscAPE which includes orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas.  The Island life and herpertarium are a little outdated (should be replaced in 2017 if they are able to stick to their master plan) these give the visitor the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of lizards and amphibians.  The Noble Aquatic Center is also worth a stop to see the seals and some tropical fish.  The aquarium is dated and will get its renovation sometime around 2019, but it is still worth a peek now.
Silver Back GorillaThe Oklahoma City Zoo is a wonderful zoo to spend a day at, and it could take you all day if you do everything the zoo has to offer.  I am excited to see what changes they have in store over the rest of this decade.  It just seems to get better each time we visit.
