Wildlife Photography: Number 23 Yellow Bellied Marmot

23 Marmot at Observation Point One of my favorite places to visit is Yellowstone National Park. I have been there 3 times in my life and cannot wait to go again. I just wish I would have known back then that I wanted to become a blogger so that I could have written down all the wonderful things I have seen or done there.  I guess I will just have to talk Karen into going again, which should not be too terribly difficult considering that is one of her favorite trips we have even been on.

This photograph was taken on a hike up to observation point on the Old Faithful trail.  To read more about the trail and what we saw there you can click here.  It was a wonderful trail that was not too terribly crowded considering it is at arguably the most visited part of Yellowstone.  At the observation point Karen and I were just standing around waiting for Old Faithful o erupt again.  It was not too long before a yellow bellied marmot approached us inquisitively and just laid down near us and watched to see what we were up to.  We watched it for a little bit and then continued looking at the marvelous sight that is that area of Yellowstone.

The next thing we knew the yellow bellied marmot had crossed the wooded railing and climbed on a rock about waist level and continued to watch us.  I did not want waste the opportunity so I slowly lowered myself to get to eye level with the marmot and took a few pictures without disturbing him.  Eventually, another couple came along the trail with a young girl who started yelling that she saw an animal.  The marmot heard her and took off.  I cannot blame the young girl for anything because I am sure that I did the same thing when I was her age.

What I like about the photograph is that it has not only the yellow bellied marmot in the shot but Old Faithful lodge and the steam rising out of the Old Faithful Geyser.  I just wish I would have been able get the marmot in a picture with Old Faithful erupting.

Its so hard to get shots of animals with the background you want (Eruption). Even without Old Faithful’s eruption its a nice shot of a marmot, well done!
