Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center: Port Aransas

dusk sky wmKenny is the most amazing vacation partner in the world!  He always does lots of research and discovers the hidden treasures within any area that we visit.  I appreciate so much the way he always goes the extra mile, searching online, checking out books from the library, gathering information, to make sure our vacations are filled to the brim with fun and excitement and that we don’t miss out on any interesting opportunity while we’re in the area.

One of many, many great places that Kenny discovered is the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas.  We were on a particularly fun filled trip to the very southern most part of Texas and got the chance to explore this neat little area.  It is basically a long raised wooden boardwalk that extends out through cattails and reeds over the water to give you unobstructed views and an up-close encounter with mother nature.  Besides the many different bird species that call this area home, there are also hummingbirds, butterflies and even aligators meandering around the waters below the boardwalk.

About midway down the boardwalk is a raised observation tower complete with a viewing scope just waiting for you to discover some unknown bird species or spy an alligator in hiding.  Kenny and I happened to time our visit at the perfect moment to see a spectacular sunset.

As of this publication date there are weekly guided birding tours on Wednesdays mornings (9:00am), but we happened to be there in the evening and basically had the place to ourselves.  It was so peaceful to just listen to the birds chirping and diving into the water, feel the wind in your hair and watch mother nature at work.

An added perk to this tucked away gem is that is is totally free.  You know Kenny and I love to pinch our pennies so we were elated that this part of our vacation was a freebie.  Even the viewing scope is free of charge.

If you ever find yourself in the Port Aransas/Padre Island area we both highly recommend taking a moment to stop by the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center.  It is a lovely spot to just relax and get back to nature.
