Top 150 Books

Happy Reader
I was reading a book by John Wooden called Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and Off the Court and he talked about his dad giving him some wonderful advice.  One of the bits of advice was to “drink deeply from good books especially The Good Book.”  I have never been ashamed of my education, but I have felt that my education is lacking and it always will be if I do not do something about it.  I have never read enough of the “good books” and I was never in an AP English class.  My school was too small to even have advanced placement classes.  Even if I had the option I am sure when I was younger I would have never wanted to be in any AP class.  However, now that I am older I feel like I should have spent a little less time in front of video games and TV and a little more time in front of some good books.

I discussed what I was feeling with Karen and we came up with an idea similar to our movie idea.  We did a Google search of ‘what are the greatest works of literature’ and took several different lists to form a master list.  Our sources on what are considered the greatest books of all time came from the BBC, NY Times, Time Magazine, Modernlibrary.com, and a few other places.  We also added a few of our own personal favorites that did not make any of the other lists that we had found.  After our research we put together a top 150 books list.    Hopefully over the next year or two we will complete our list.  Karen is going to be reading one by herself, I will also be reading a different one and there will be an additional book that we will read together.  Each book that we read we will give a review of how we felt about it based on a 5 shell rating 1 being terrible (wish I could get that time back) to 5 being remarkable (one of the greatest books written.)  We feel that reading these books will not only help us appreciate life more, but will give us a better understanding of life, and like our movie project it will help us become better communicators with each other.

Please look over our list and let us know what you think.  Did we leave any books out that you would have included?  Also, check out our reviews and see if it is something that you might want to read.  As John Wooden’s dad said, “You’ll never learn a thing that you didn’t learn from someone else.”
