Number 12: Balance Rock

Balance Rock
Number 12 is a photograph of Balance Rock at Arches National Park in Utah.  I like the stark difference between the deep blue sky and red of Balance Rock.  I have been to Arches National Park four times because I just can not get enough of those arches.  The variation between the rock and desert leaves me awestruck.  Everything around it looks the same, and then you drive in the park and see the arches, it seems to take you into a completely foreign place.  Growing up, one of my favorite movies was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  When I was eight my family went on vacation to Woodland Park, Colorado visiting my grandparents who  would take their camper out there for a couple of months in the summertime every year.   Every summer for a week we would go out there and visit.  Well, one summer day it was raining so we went into town and watched Indiana Jones.  I remembered the opening scene where young Indiana is trying to escape the bad guys through the desert.  Much later I eventually bought the Indiana Jones collection (first 3 films- I do not include the 4th since it was terrible) and as I watched them I realized the opening scene was from the Last Crusade was filmed in Arches National Park.  Now, every time I see the movie I think of my vacations there or if I am in the park I think of the movie.  It is kind of a two for one thing I’ve got going on.

I like this photo because it is one of the iconic parts of the park, but more than that it reminds of me of my family vacations going to visit my grandparents in their favorite spot near Woodland Park Colorado and that raining day that we went and saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade which shortly there after became one of my favorite movies.
