Mountain Farm Museum is a great place to get out of the car and stretch your legs in the Great Smoky Moutain National Park. It is located at Oconaluftee Visitor Center which is just 2 miles away from the town of Cherokee. The Mountain Farm Museum is exactly as it sounds it is an old farm home with outbuildings. It is a wonderful experience seeing how people made a living when it was just them and the wilderness and nobody or government there to hold their hands.
There are several buildings that Karen and I explored while we were there. The buildings at the museum included a farmhouse, barn, blacksmith building, meat house, and a few other buildings. There were also guides that were in period dresses and there were plenty of signs that explained what each building was designed for and how certain products were made like lye soap. The farm even came equipped with a vegetable garden and fruit trees.
The farm is set in a beautiful location in valley next to the Oconaluftee River. If you have been driving all day and do not feel like taking any of the other day hikes the park offers then this is as good a place as any to get out of your car and stretch those legs.
