Newfound Gap Road: Great Smoky Mountains National Park

smokies 2 watermark

Newfound Gap Road is the main road through Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  It starts in the town of Gatlinburg and ends at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center.  The road starts out with an elevation of 1,400 ft and tops out around 5,000 ft.  While driving the road try not to be in a hurry because there are many pullovers and scenic overlooks along the route.  Also, along the way there are many places to stop for hiking like Chimney Tops trail and Alum Cave Bluffs.  What makes the road beautiful is that it is right next to two pristine running rivers.  There were lots of places to stop and take photographs.

Driving Newfound Gap Road really shows why this area is called the Great Smoky Mountains. Looking out across the overlooks and seeing the low lying clouds, or when you reach Newfound Gap we were driving through the clouds.  Our visibility at the top was less than ten feet.

Oh my goodness Kenny these are so good. It really makes me want to go. You are just tempting me with too many places. Yellowstone, Tetons, Omaha zoo, Mount Rushmore, Smoky Mountains, and most of all Hawaii, but Sequoia and Yosimite Park were pretty special. Thanks
